DESIREE releases her debut EP "Intersexy"
On November 12, South African artist Desiree releases her debut EP, "Intersexy", a two-track journey that dives into her personal story as an intersex woman and expresses her pride in her heritage.
This project is a powerful statement of self, mixing deep introspection with a bold reimagining of Afro house music. The title track, "Intersexy", goes beyond traditional house music, blending South African rhythms with lush, cinematic string arrangements to create a unique orchestral house sound. Desiree describes it as "a house music track created with an orchestra", where classical elements take the spotlight over more familiar electronic sounds. Through "Intersexy", she seeks to bring awareness to intersex identities, using her platform to offer both representation and visibility to underrepresented communities.
The EP opens with "Khuluma Nami" which translates to "speak with me" in Zulu featuring the soulful vocals of Jabulile Majola. This song creates an intimate space that invites listeners into a dialogue, with Majola’s vocals adding depth and warmth. The track pays homage to Desiree’s South African roots, blending Afro house beats with classical strings, crafting a sound that’s both traditional and innovative. Through this blending of genres, Desiree connects with her listeners on an emotional level, breaking away from the typical house framework to craft a uniquely Afro house soundscape.
With the launch of " Intersexy", Desiree also announces the creation of her record label, MMINO a word that means "music" in the Sepedi language. MMINO aims to be a platform that embraces the nuances of Afro house, promoting sounds that blend innovation with tradition. Desiree’s goal is to provide space for the diverse musical identities that make up the universe of African house music, creating a home for artists who share this dynamic and evolving vision.
To celebrate the release of "Intersexy", Desiree has also announced an upcoming African tour, with stops in Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa. For her, this tour represents more than just performances; it’s a chance to connect directly with her audience, spreading a message of pride, inclusivity, and artistic freedom across the continent.
