Evan De Novellis: "I want to evoke a combination of melancholy"

Evan De Novellis is an innovative musician in the melodic techno genre, known for blending melancholic sounds with energetic beats. His compositions explore emotional atmospheres while maintaining the rhythmic drive typical of techno, creating a listening experience that resonates with both introspective listeners and those seeking high-energy vibes.

Your new single "Save Me" on Sinners is filled with deep emotions and dark atmospheres. What was the inspiration behind this track, and how do you feel it fits into your artistic journey?

Thank you for the kind words! “Save Me” was born from a very personal space. I was exploring feelings of isolation and the desire for connection, and I wanted to channel that into a sound that feels both haunting and intense. The dark atmospheres represent that emotional weight, while the energetic drive symbolizes the struggle to break free from it. A desire to be heard. To be saved.

In my artistic journey, this track represents a key moment. It delves deeper into darker, more personal themes while maintaining the energetic intensity that defines my sound. It feels like a natural progression, where I’m pushing my emotional and creative boundaries further than before.

You've mentioned that Moby was one of your earliest influences. What did you learn from his work, and how have you incorporated that approach into your own music, especially with your blend of techno and progressive house?

Moby’s ability to infuse emotion into electronic music was something that really resonated with me early on. He showed me that electronic music could be more than just beats; it could tell a story and evoke deep feelings. There are really albums and songs from Moby that I consider like the bible.

I’ve carried that approach into my own work, especially in my blend of techno. I focus on creating tracks that are not only energetic but also emotionally charged, allowing listeners to connect on a deeper level while still feeling the intensity of the music.

You've been producing music since you were 17. How has your creative process evolved over the years, and what are some of the biggest challenges you've faced in perfecting your sound?

Since I began producing at 17, my creative process has become more refined. Early on, I was exploring and learning, but now I approach each track with a clearer vision. One of the biggest challenges has been evolving my sound while staying true to my roots. Balancing emotional depth with technical precision has taken time, but it’s helped me perfect the fusion of energy and emotion that defines my music today.

Living in Germany, a country with a vibrant electronic music scene, how has this environment influenced your music compared to your Italian roots?

Living in Germany has given me the opportunity to truly appreciate the depth of the techno culture and the people who support it. However, my core sound didn’t change when I moved here. Instead, being in this environment has reinforced my love for techno and allowed me to experience the scene firsthand.

My sound is still deeply influenced by my Italian roots, especially in terms of emotion and melody. What Germany has offered is a deeper understanding of the energy and passion that drives the techno scene here, which has only strengthened my approach without shifting the essence of my music.

Your sound blends elements of techno and progressive house with intense melodies. How do you balance energy and melancholy in your productions, and what emotions do you aim to evoke in your listeners?

Balancing energy and melancholy in my music comes down to creating a dynamic contrast. I weave emotional, introspective melodies into the intensity of driving rhythms. The energy keeps the track moving, while the melancholy adds depth and emotion.

I want to evoke a mix of emotions in my listeners — a sense of melancholy, where they can reflect and connect deeply with the music, but also a feeling of empowerment. The music carries a powerful energy, so while it invites introspection, it also gives a sense of strength and determination, allowing the listener to feel both vulnerable and uplifted at the same time.
